Ibrahim , a brave young teacher, finds that the village he is about to move into, somewhat odd. A travelling pilgrim confirms his impression when he says that the lives of village people are like broken kites. Sulaeman, the religious teacher and village elder, is trying to influence the morally depraved Harun, the richest man in the village whose life revolves around gambling and homosexual acts. But Sulaeman’s way of teaching is fundamental and conservative. This is very different from Ibrahim’s style so he has many altercations with the old teacher. Ibrahim also has to deal with Arsad (Soultan Saladin), a young thug who despises his presence, especially because Ibrahim had once caught him raping Halimah, the village girl who is mentally ill. He also has to deal with Harun’s wife, Jamilah, who falls in love with him and later slanders him with an accusation of rape. Ibrahim is like a bridge over troubled waters but he manages to deepen the awareness of the village people. This is one of director Chaerul Umam’s best films.
