Synopsis

The arrogant young man, Harsono debauches Suryani and leaves her for the city. Harsono's brother, Sutopo takes responsibility by marrying the girl who he is actually in love with. In the city, Harsono is drawn to the floozy Sandra. When he realizes his mistake, he takes it out on Sandra. Sandra's death, however, is caused by a heart attack, and not by his actions. Harsono goes back to his village. Sutopo tries to reconcile Suryani with Harsono when he returns. But Suryani chooses to stay with her husband, Sutopo.

Note

Usmar Ismail resigned after making this second film, after Harta Karun (Hidden Treasure) for the Dutch company, South Pacific Film Corporation. He said that he was only given the freedom to select stories and nothing else. Usmar wrote in 1962: "I cannot really say that the two films are my works, (since) during the writing process and the film’s production, there were so many instructions (from the producers) that I disagreed with."

As a result, Usmar often acknowledged Darah dan Doa (The Long March, 1950) as his first movie.

Of Tjitra (Shadow/Image), Usmar said that it was “the first film to raise the question of national consciousness which was common to literature for a long time.”
