Tuyul

A tuyul is a small ghost or an imp, believed to be able to do anything ordered by its owner. It is usually ordered to collect wealth and fortune and this belief is widespread in some places in Java. The film seems to be inspired by a television technique that makes people and things look smaller or bigger. This technique can be also done on film but it requires a high degree of meticulousness. Hidayat and his wife try to live honestly by opening a store, but after struggling for a long time, their financial condition does not improve. Instead, they owe a lot of debts to different people such as Wan Abud. Hidayat is forced to come back to his parents-in-law to work as a film distributor. Unfortunately, the parents-in-law’s business also goes bankrupt and he is thrown out from their house and has to leave his wife. Hidayat becomes depressed and hopeless. In the end, he decides to keep a tuyul with the help of a shaman. His dream to become rich is achieved but with a heavy price.
