Sehelai Merah Putih

(title translation: A Sheet of Indonesian Flag/A Sheet of Red and White)

During the Dutch occupation, Suharjo works in a sugar factory where he meets Sumarni, the daughter of a Wedana (a district chief), who becomes his wife. Happiness does not last long as Suharjo is involved in a fight with a Dutch man and is thrown in jail. His son is born while he is still in prison. After his release, the Japanese invade the country and Suharjo joins the underground resistance. The Japanese withdraw after WWII ends but the Dutch return. Suharjo joins the fight again but this time he is killed in battle. Before he dies, he leaves his revolver, wrapped in a red and white cloth, for his wife. Now Sumarni joins the revolution by forming women troops. After the Dutch withdrawal, Sumarni works in the Rumah Sakit Pusat Angkatan Darat (Infantry Center Hospital), where she tells her story to the women of Persit (Infantry Wives Union). They offer her a full university scholarship for Sumarni’s son until he finishes his education.
