Synopsis
(title translation: The Dawn Attack)
Presenting several historical facts that occur in Yogyakarta, these patriotic events highlighted include the raising of Indonesian’s Red and White flag in Gedung Agung, the invasion of the Japanese headquarters in Kota Baru, the invasion of Maguwo airport and successive attacks at dawn around Salatiga, Semarang. Apart from the thousands of youth and the people of Yogyakarta, their leaders are also shown in the historical events, such as Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Soeharto. All the events are woven with the presence of Temon, an innocent little boy, who lives during the war with his grandmother. He always asks about his father who has died. The presence of a fighter becomes his father figure. There is also a story about Romo, a Yogyakarta noble family member, who vigorously helps the fighters. Meanwhile, his wife is afraid of losing her status as a noble because one of her daughters is having a relationship with a rebel commoner.
Note
Upon releasing, the duration of the film is edited to approximately 120 minutes by the producer.
Noted Krishna Sen in her book, Indonesian Cinema – Framing the New Order: “The film uses wayang tropes quite consciously. Serangan Fajar opens with the vision of a rumbling mountain covering the exapanse of the cinemascope screen evoking a wayang opening, with the gunungan, the mountain-shaped symbol of the universe, casting its trembling shadow across the white screen o which the story or lakon is to be played out by the leather puppets. The symbols would not be lost on a Javanese audience...”
