Ratu Sakti Calon Arang

(title translation: Calon Arang the Powerful Queen)

Calon Arang, a widow with supernatural power, plans to seize the Daha throne. Her ambition scares the people. Her daughter, Ratna Mangali, is different from her mother. She is kind and often helps the people. This makes Calon Arang angry, and as a result, men are afraid to propose to her daughter. To contain the brutality of Calon Arang, the king of Daha tries to find out the weakness of the supernatural widow by asking Empu Baradah for help. Baradah sends Empu Bahala, his son, to marry Ratna Mangali. Once Calon Arang’s secret is learnt, Empu Baradah and Bahula attack her. Bahula still keeps Ratna Mangali as his wife. This East Java legend is told in Balinese style, in terms of costume, music, customs and beliefs.
