Synopsis
The story of two young people from wealthy families who are looking for their own individual identities. Ramona (Lydia Kandou), who hates the patriarchal attitude men have toward women, immerses herself in the lives of the less fortunate people around her. Ramadhan (Djamal Mirdad), who is descended from Malaysian nobility, is in Jakarta gaining work experience as a low level company employee. The two young people meet in Jakarta and begin to like each other. The blossoming romance between these two young people who are each keeping their backgrounds secret from the other conveyed in a light and humorous tone. Eventually, however, they find out about each others' backgrounds. Ramona backs off, while Ramadhan continues to pursue her. Throughout the telling of this story, both the writer of the scenario and the director of the film attempt to insert their perceptions of a number of social issues: women abandoned by their lovers after they become pregnant, unfair treatment in the workplace, etc. As is required of any romantic comedy, this film concludes with a happy ending.
• This film was funded by a Malaysian nobleman through Jamal Mirdad, an long-standing friend. Once the film was released to a good response, a rift appeared to develop because the nobleman seemed to be trying to steal the limelight. This film was highly successful in a number of provinces, although it did not do as well in Jakarta. Citra awards for best film and best actor and actress stirred a debate among the film community and industry observers.
* Won 1992 Indonesian Film Festival Citra awards for Film, Director, Scenario, Lead Actor (Jamal Mirdad) and Lead Actress (Lydia Kandou). Also nominated for Supporting Actor (Amak Baldjun), Story, Photography, Artistic Design, Editing and Music at the same festival. Also won praise for Director and Actress at the 1993 Bandung Film Festival.
