Bram and Nona marry without her parent’s approval, as she is already arranged to marry Paul. The life of the husband and wife is only supported by Bram’s small salary so they live in the slums, which is realistically depicted. They also have problems with Nien, Bram’s old unmarried sister. When their third child is going to be born, Bram contracts a lung disease but forces himself to keep working. Nona helps by taking sewing jobs from Lili, second wife of the owner of the auto-repair shop where Bram works. Then Bram commits suicide, by cutting the vein in his hand while writing a letter to Nona.
