Rini Tomboy

This film is an expression of the way of life of adolescents as told from the point of view of the teenagers themselves as they rebel against the world of adults. Susan (Nunu Datau), Dody (Adjie Massaid) dan Rini (Cornelia Agatha) are students at SMA 2000. They have unconsciously formed a kind of gang. The film follows the activities of these young people while they are in school, on holiday, and just hanging around. The film focuses on Rini, nicknamed “tomboy”, an expert in karate who dreams of being a martial arts master and hero. Even though she is from a wealthy family, Rini is open to friendships with less fortunate people. She is the ideal character. She is also sympathetic toward Samil (Tio Pakusadewo), a poor youth, whose life is a bit of a mess. Rini’s relationship with Samil upsets the other members of her gang. The filmmakers appear to have desired to try out a wide variety of scenes, ranging from  drama to action. They seem to have been intent at proving that there are alternative ways to make films. Unfortunately, their efforts were not supported by a good, strong story.

• Adapted from a radio drama of the same name. This film was made by students, alumni and teachers of the Jakarta Art Institute (Institut Kesenian Jakarta, IKJ) in cooperation with Kodak and the National Film Development Company (Perusahhan Pengembangan Film National, PPFN. This project was meant to provide an opportunity for IKJ students and alumni to make a feature film.
