Roro Mendut

The young and beautiful Roro Mendut, one of the assets of the Pati region, is brought to Mataram. In his joyous moment, Sultan Agung rewards Tumenggung Wiroguno, with the war loot, for his success in controlling the region’s revolt in the north Java ocean in the 17th century. Wiroguno cannot fully enjoy all the gifts as Roro Mendut declines to be taken as a concubine. Wiroguno is devastated and his pride crushed. For the sake of his dignity and pride, he punishes Roro Mendut with a heavy tax. However, Roro Mendut always manages to pay her tax. She smokes cigarettes and sells them in a closed stall. The shorter the smoked cigarette, the more expensive it becomes. One day, Roro Mendut meets and falls in love with Pronocitro. But their relationship is hampered by Tumenggung Wiroguno. Pronocitro finds a way to serve Tumenggung Wiroguno. Later, he asks Roro Mendut to run away with him. Wiroguno is furious and vows to capture Roro Mendut, not only for the matter of his personal dignity and pride, but to uphold the grandeur and victory of the Mataram Kingdom over the Pati Region. Pronocitro and Roro Mendut commit suicide.
