Merintis Djalan ke Sorga

(title translation: Clearing the Way to Heaven)

Returning home from prayer, Melati, daughter of a rickshaw driver, is chased by Edward, who has just come out of church. She tries to avoid him and is hit by a car. Edward feels guilty and saves Melati by donating his blood. They fall in love but have religious differences as Melati is a Muslim while Edward is Catholic. Oddly, the two characters never discuss marriage or their future, which seems a strangely absent discussion. Then as a result of the religious mismatch, Melati becomes ill and Edward runs away from home. Melati’s father takes her back to their village and Edward has to let her go.
