Synopsis

 

Mutiara dalam Lumpur (Pearls from Mud)
Khalid, an orphan, hitchhikes on Puang Aziz’s (WD Mochtar) cart and is then adopted by him to be a playmate for his daughter, Fatimah (Totty Nasution). Fatimah’s elder brother, Asikin (Farouk Afero), has gone away to study in Makasar. Fatimah is match-made to Hasan, son of Karaeng Bela (Moh Mochtar), Puang Aziz’s rival in orange farming. The rivalry is a cause of enmity between the two families and the marriage is planned to end it. Khalid (Sophan Sophiaan) grows up as a diligent worker and becomes a good friend of Hasan (Sentot S), they even swear loyallty to each other during “silat” martial arts training. But Asikin dislikes Khalid and when he learns that Khalid and Fatimah love each other, Asikin sends men to kidnap and torture Khalid. Khalid disappears so Fatimah marries Hasan. Then Asikin takes control of the estate, while his father dies disappointed, watching how Asikin, squanders the fortune. When Asikin falls into debt, suddenly Khalid returns a rich man and he challenges Asikin to gamble away his last possessions. The news of Khalid’s return reaches Fatimah and she goes to meet him by the lake, where they used to spend time together. Hasan, who feels Fatimah never reciprocated his love, defends his honour by challenging Khalid to a duel. He asks his men to shoot Khalid if he loses. So Khalid is shot when Hasan loses, but finds out that Khalid did not have the heart to win the duel. Hasan feels remorse and cries, especially since Fatimah, who has given birth, commits suicide. Hasan orders that the two are buried side by side.
