Mak Tjomblang

(title translation: Matchmaker)

Ambarita is a spinster who dreams of having an “ambtenar” (civil servant) husband. Thanks to Ellya the matchmaker, five candidates are selected: Serabi; a widower and also a statesman, Omar Dahlan; a retired marine, Marto; a middle-class officer who behaves like a Dutch, Arjuna; an “ambtenar” of Raad van Indie Office, and Ahmadin; an officer from the city hall. Since Ahmadin is a shy guy, he asks Julius Kasim to help him out. On the first meeting Ambarita is unable to decide. Since the matchmaker tries to take advantages of them, the candidates start withdrawing one by one. One says that he is sorry to know that Ambarita cannot speak French, while another thinks that Ambarita is not serious. But in the end, Ambarita meets her match.
