The Crescent Moon

In the mind of Mahmud (60), there is nothing more precious than a genuine struggle to apply Islamic order in all aspects of life. For years Mahmud preachs that everyone should believe that Islam is the only solution of all the problems of life.

Unfortunately, the spirit of Mahmud is marred when he hears that determining the new moon in Ministry of Religion cost nine billion rupiahs. The reality makes him remembering again the tradition of his boarding school. A tradition that does not run again since his school broke up decades ago.

Mahmud wants to repeat the tradition to prove to everyone that liturgy is not made to enrich people. The new moon can be found without having billion rupiah costs. Unfortunately, his efforts are hampered by his daughter. She is worried about the declining health of Mahmud.

Mahmud insists on going. Mahmud may go only if accompanied by Heli (Hilal) (28), his youngest son, who has long gone out of the house because he is always at odds. Heli, an environmental activists, who is often making Mahmud frustrated with his liberal secular criticism.

Heli is forced to comply with her sister’s wish who works at the immigration office. He hopes she helps renewing his passport which expired coincide with the Eid holiday. He needs help so he can go abroad to help the activists against environmental destruction in Nicaragua. On the way there goes a father-son dialogue of different views, especially when they find the events that force them to explain their position.
