Synopsis
Viona (Atiqah Hasiholan) and her friends land in Kansai airport, Osaka, for a study and residence program in Japan. Viona meets Yamada (Joe Taslim), a freelance photographer who turns out to be fluent in Indonesian. Viona makes a new friend. They become closer until to a point that Yamada proposes her. He doesn’t even mind to change religion.
During Yamada’s preparation to become a mualaf (new convert in Islam), Viona remembers that a woman has given her son’s address in Japan and asked for Viona’s help to search for him. The woman’s son is Hasan (Ario Bayu), Viona’s bestfriend. Hasan avoided Viona and his family, leaving Viona filled with questions. With Yamada’s help, Hasan is found. But he has turned into a very different man. One night at the Osaka port Hasan tells everything. It is an honesty that answers all of Viona’s and Yamada’s questions. The three of them suddenly find themselves at crossroads of religion, lover and future.
Note
Adapted from a story by Ellnovianty Nine, “Pelajar Setengah TKI” (Half Student Half Migrant Worker) in the book La Tahzan for Students. The film’s initial title was Orenji.
