(title translation: Welts of Regret)

Stretching over 21 years, the film begins in Semarang, 1966. Roy Paturungi, an orphan, is furious for never passing the exams of Professor Handoko. Handoko, who is separated from his wife, has his reason, as Roy is romantically involved with his daughter, Paramita. Handoko is possessive and does not want his daughter to be apart from him. Then Roy goes into a rage and wrecks Handoko’s car, and is imprisoned for two years. Shortly after his release, he stays in Paramita's room for several days, before he disappears. As a result, Paramita is pregnant and when Handoko finds out, he is shocked and dies. Paramita gives birth to twins but rejects them for causing the death of her father. With help from the family’s doctor, Alim, along with his psychiatrist colleague, both babies are adopted by two different families. The next chapter opens in Jakarta, 1988. The two babies are now grown up. Ardi, is raised in a modest family, while Erik is raised in a wealthy but broken home. Erik and Ardi study in the same university and are both after the same girl, Vina. Meanwhile, another student, Norma, is attracted to Ardi. But at a party, Norma holds a beer drinking contest with Erik, and then they have sex. Norma deliberately provokes Ardi, for when Ardi sees her while she is half-naked, she screams as if she is being raped. Ardi is then arrested but is then defended by Paramita. In court, Paramita proves that there was no rape. A discovery emerges from the medical examination: the blood and sperm of Erik are identical to Ardi’s. Meanwhile, Roy forces Ardi to marry Norma, just like what Handoko did to Roy more than 20 years ago. Ardi holds a duel and beats Erik, so Erik has to marry Norma. When the wedding is about to be held, Dr. Alim stops the marriage since they are the children of the same man. Roy, who does not want to embarrass his son, rams his car into Dr. Alim who dies. Roy returns to prison where he tries to commit suicide. Finally, everyone gathers to learn the secret family history.
