Bercanda Dalam Duka

(title translation: Jovial in Sadness)

A Central Java village is exposed to toxic gas. Winarti, foster daughter of village head, Dikun, is pregnant. Winarti is loathed by her foster mother and stepsister, Yana, and is isolated even more, when Yana’s husband, Puguh, who has a second wife, Rani, is against her. Winarti’s best friend, Bisu, becomes the scapegoat when he is accused of impregnating Winarti and is banished from the village. Puguh’s father, Den Cokro, who is responsible for the cooperative’s finances, attempts to overthrow Dikun by removing the toxic gas warning signage, thus endangering the people. In the end, it is revealed that Puguh raped and impregnated Winarti. Dikun’s housemaid reveals this after a shoot-out that killed Puguh, Bisu, and Winarti.
