Bengawan Solo

Wenangsih kills herself by jumping into the Solo River. She does this after being deceived by the empty promises made by Soeprapto. Both her children are left with a letter. Sriwulan is fostered to the noble family of R. Widagdo, and Kromo, a poor farmer, takes her sister, Hindrawati. Sriwulan is paired off to Soeprapto's son by her stepfather. Meanwhile, Hindrawati is hired as a maid at Sriwulan’s house. Just before Sriwulan's wedding, Soeprapto's secret is revealed by Prawoto, Wenangsih's brother. So the marriage between stepsiblings is prevented. Soeprapto is so shocked by the truth that he jumps into the Solo River after seeing an image of Wenangsih calling him.
