Maria is a rich girl dating Joshua, the son of a housemaid, who is an engineer. The two lovers elope when Maria is matched to Bertus, whose father helped Maria’s father, when he was on the brink of bankruptcy. But Maria’s father forces her to marry Bertus and orders her to have an abortion. Maria refuses to do so, and although Bertus’s mother finds out about her pregnancy, the wedding continues. Bertus is disappointed that Maria is not a virgin anymore and already pregnant. However, he does not divorce Maria, but tortures her every day.
